What to Put in Your Home Birth Kit

02/05/2023

I’ve been blessed to have two out-of-hospital births. My first baby was delivered at a birthing center, and baby number two was delivered at home. While both experiences were very beautiful and positive for me, my home birth experience was by far the most rewarding and empowering. I believe this is due in large part to how much of the preparation fell on ME, specifically when it came time to build my home birth kit. Because I was in the driver’s seat, I was able to build a home birth kit that made me feel safe, comfortable, and prepared when it came time to give birth.

If you’re having a home birth and have no idea where to start preparing, I got you sis! I’ve put together as comprehensive of a list as you can get. I built my home birth kit using lists and advice from my midwife, YouTube home birth prep videos, my prior experience at the birth center, and blog posts (like this one!). My prayer is that you will be able to use my list for ideas and guidance as you build your own home birth kit.

Home Birth Kit Essentials:

  1. Disposable Underpads – Underpads are essential to protect your furniture and floors from blood and other bodily fluids as you labor and give birth. They are also useful postpartum to protect your bed and other furniture when your blood flow is very heavy. You will want about 20 of these.
  2. Shower curtain liners – These can be used as a mattress protector, and a tarp under the birth pool.
  3. Fishnet – if you’re having a water birth, having a fishnet comes in handy in case you poop in the water while pushing (I know it sounds  disgusting, but pooping while pushing is very common in labor and nothing to be ashamed of).
  4. Sterile bulb syringe – to clear baby’s nose and throat after birth
  5. Adult diapers – there will be lots (and lots) of bleeding after birth. I’ve found that adult diapers are the most absorbent AND secure. I prefer them hands-down over pads and underwear in those first few days after birth. These are my favorite. They are comfortable and super absorbent, and they are not easily seen through your clothes.
  6. Heavy pads and large, high-waisted underwear – after you’re done with the diapers, pads in varying absorbencies coupled with high-waisted underwear will help keep everything contained and comfortable.
  7. Nursing supplies – stretchy bras, nipple cream, nursing pads, nursing pillow
  8. Dermoplast – this pain relieving spray helps relieve burning, itching, and soreness
  9. Sitz bath – this herbal bath helps promote healing after birth. I also like to use this Sitz spray.
  10. Angled Peri bottle – to clean yourself when you go to the bathroom. Wiping is a huge “no” after you give birth. Using an angled peri bottle and patting yourself dry is best practices in those first few days postpartum (especially if you have stitches down there).
  11. Baby items – diapers, wipes, newborn hat, 6-8 receiving blankets, 2 changes of clothes/onesies, plush blanket
  12. Swim suit top or sports bra – for laboring in the water
  13. Robe – during labor your body can swing from hot to cold. Keeping a light robe nearby that you can take on or off will go a long way.
  14. Clorox wipes – for cleaning and disinfecting afterwards
  15. Large bowl for placenta – whether you plan to encapsulate it or toss it, you’ll need somewhere to hold the placenta once you deliver it.
  16. Hydrogen Peroxide – used to disinfect
  17. Labor playlist – music and/or affirmations that make you feel relaxed, comforted, and empowered. The Childbirth in the Glory playlist on YouTube was so helpful for me!
  18. Extension cord – needed if the place you labor in is far away from outlets, but you want to be able to charge your phone or camera nearby
  19. Heating pad – for pain relief during labor and to help regulate baby’s temperature once he/she is born if needed.
  20. Birth ball – for pain relief and to help get baby in position during labor
  21. Small bottle of olive or almond oil – spread a little of this on the baby’s bottom right after birth. It will help the meconium – baby’s super sticky first poop – wipe right off
  22. Hospital emergency plan printed out – because emergencies do happen. Have this solidified well in advance.
  23. Food and drinks for labor and postpartum – protein bars, energy drinks, and a large meal to have once baby is born.
  24. Ibuprofen or Tylenol – for pain relief postpartum
  25. Birth pool and liner*** – your midwife should provide this or instruct you wear to buy it from
  26. Flashlight and extra batteries  – for the midwife to see “down there” while you’re in the birthing pool
  27. Lead-free water hose and sink adapter for hose – for filling the birth pool
  28. 2 sets of linens/sheets
  29. 6-8 bath towels
  30. 2 large trash bags
  31. Comfy postpartum outfit or pajamas for mom
  32. Backup batteries for cameras/phones
  33. Large water bottle or tumbler
  34. Thermometer
  35. ***In addition your midwife will likely have additional items for you to buy in her own customized home birth kit***

How to Have a Daily Quiet Time with God

Postpartum shedding done took my edges OUT. I was Postpartum shedding done took my edges OUT. I was expecting this since this isn’t my first rodeo, but it’s still annoying 😒.

Now that my go to lazy girl hair style (a puff) is out of the question, I’ve had to learn how to master styles that will hide my hairline until the hair grows back.

If you’ve been here a while you know I don’t know how to do hair and twist outs and me do not mix, but I think I finally got it! How do you think I did??

Also, please drop your tips for simple styles to do that will hide a thinning hairline. I’m taking all the help I can get 😩
Every verse here is special to me, but this week Z Every verse here is special to me, but this week Zephaniah 3:17 hits home the most.

I know how excited I get when I think about my God, but to think He gets just as excited about me is still something I can’t fully wrap my brain around. I love knowing that God - as perfect as He is and as powerful as He is - has a soft spot for little old imperfect me.

This week I’m praying for everyone who comes across this post. May the love of God ease your every fear and insecurity, and may you rest content and at peace in His overflowing love towards you ♥️
I’ve been posting a daily Bible verse in my stor I’ve been posting a daily Bible verse in my stories for almost 3 years now. I recently took a (long) break and decided to bring the daily verses back as a weekly post on my feed.

The goal is to let the word “live” permanently on my page so you can come back to verses that resonate with you over and over again.

One of the best things you can do for your relationship with God is to spend time in His word. Don’t just be satisfied with these snippets. Open up your Bible (or the Bible app) and read the full chapter for more context and clarity. That’s how we get to know God better!

I pray these verses encourage and strengthen you as you take on this new week. Praying for you and cheering you on, friend ♥️

My number one laundry must-have is this baby laund My number one laundry must-have is this baby laundry stain remover spray. Listen, @dreft did their thing when they made this. It has been holding me down since Toni Noelle was a newborn.

I use this spray on literally EVERYTHING. It’s gotten spaghetti sauce stains out of my rugs. Coffee stains out of my white settee and so much more.

I also really like that it’s safe to use around the kids. It’s made of plant-based ingredients and doesn’t contain any dyes so I don’t have to worry about it harming them.

Do yourself a favor and grab a bottle (or 2). I included a link to it in my bio ♥️

Also, this is not sponsored. I wasn’t paid for this or sent any products for free. I been spending my own money on this for years and think you’ll love it like I do!
I shared this message in a caption of a reel last I shared this message in a caption of a reel last year and after adding baby number 2 to the tribe a few months ago, I’m standing ten toes down on it.

As seasons change splitting the work looks different than before, but it still needs to happen. I couldn’t imagine working all day and my partner not help me maintain the place we both call home or take care of the kids he helped me make.

Single ladies, have this conversation as early in the relationship as you can so you both have the right expectations going into marriage. Also take stock of his cleaning habits beforehand so you won’t be caught off guard later I’m fortunate because I didn’t marry a lazy man. He was on top of keeping his bachelor pad in order way before I came into the picture 🙌🏾

Now if you’re already in a relationship and struggling in this area, now would be a great time to lovingly but firmly set some boundaries, ask for some help, then get to delegating. God tells you to be your home’s manager, not a workhorse ♥️

P.S.
Now is a great time to remind you to grab the free prayer guide: “14 Days of Declaring Scriptures Over Your Husband”. It’s linked in my bio under “Free Guides”
