Overcoming Anxiety & Worry with God’s Word

10/18/2021

overcoming anxiety and worry

I don’t know if it’s just me, but it seems like anxiety has been on the rise lately. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t see a reference to worry or anxiety – either on social media or offline amongst my friend group. Generalized anxiety is common. Every one of us will experience some level of worry and anxiety since it is a natural response to stress; however, when worry and anxiety become chronic and/or begin to interrupt our daily life, it becomes a problem and can lead to an actual anxiety disorder.

My friend, God never meant for us to spend our days anxious, worried, and stressed. In the Bible, He addresses our mental and emotional well-being numerous times, because He cares about our mental and emotional health. If you’re struggling with feeling anxious or worried, be encouraged. God is a comforter and a healer, and He is willing and able to restore your peace!

One of the tools He has given us to be victorious over anxiety and worry is His word. The Bible is full of scriptures for strengthening our mental health. I have highlighted 5 of my favorite ones in depth here, and also included a Bible plan with 25 more powerful scriptures for overcoming anxiety and worry. Take time to read each one, meditating on its truth and asking God to show you how to apply it to your life.

5 Powerful Bible Verses for Overcoming Anxiety and Worry

Philippians 4:6-7

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Through the power of prayer, we can exchange our worry and anxiety for God’s peace. The word says that the peace of God will literally guard our hearts and minds against attack when we take the time to submit all of our worries to Him in prayer.

John 14:27

I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

Outside of Jesus (the Prince of Peace), the world can only offer us temporary joy and comfort, but only Jesus gives lasting peace. If you belong to Jesus, you literally have the embodiment of peace living inside of you and the peace He gives can not be taken away from us.

1 Peter 5:7

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

When anxiety and worry come in, the Bible tells us to throw all of it onto God. He alone is strong enough to carry those things that make us worried and afraid. When you feel yourself giving in to anxiety and worry, remember that you don’t have to carry those burdens alone. Turn them over to the Lord and let Him take the lead.

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

What we constantly think about has a tremendous effect on our mental health. If we continually meditate on bad and stressful things, we will absolutely fall into stress. Overcoming anxiety and worry requires that we fix our thinking on things that promote peace, joy, and confidence – things that create a positive mental outlook instead of one of doom and gloom.

Luke 12:25-26, 31

Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things? … Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and He will give you everything you need.

Worrying is so destructive and ineffective. None of our worrying can add a single positive thing to our lives. When we worry, we allow a future possibility to steal the joy out of our present. Instead of rehearsing all of the ways things are going wrong, we can instead fix our eyes on God and the work He is calling us to do today, being confident that as we tend to our relationship with Him, He will tend to our needs.

Every verse here is special to me, but this week Z Every verse here is special to me, but this week Zephaniah 3:17 hits home the most.

I know how excited I get when I think about my God, but to think He gets just as excited about me is still something I can’t fully wrap my brain around. I love knowing that God - as perfect as He is and as powerful as He is - has a soft spot for little old imperfect me.

This week I’m praying for everyone who comes across this post. May the love of God ease your every fear and insecurity, and may you rest content and at peace in His overflowing love towards you ♥️
I’ve been posting a daily Bible verse in my storie I’ve been posting a daily Bible verse in my stories for almost 3 years now. I recently took a (long) break and decided to bring the daily verses back as a weekly post on my feed.

The goal is to let the word “live” permanently on my page so you can come back to verses that resonate with you over and over again.

One of the best things you can do for your relationship with God is to spend time in His word. Don’t just be satisfied with these snippets. Open up your Bible (or the Bible app) and read the full chapter for more context and clarity. That’s how we get to know God better!

I pray these verses encourage and strengthen you as you take on this new week. Praying for you and cheering you on, friend ♥️

My number one laundry must-have is this baby laund My number one laundry must-have is this baby laundry stain remover spray. Listen, @dreft did their thing when they made this. It has been holding me down since Toni Noelle was a newborn.

I use this spray on literally EVERYTHING. It’s gotten spaghetti sauce stains out of my rugs. Coffee stains out of my white settee and so much more.

I also really like that it’s safe to use around the kids. It’s made of plant-based ingredients and doesn’t contain any dyes so I don’t have to worry about it harming them.

Do yourself a favor and grab a bottle (or 2). I included a link to it in my bio ♥️

Also, this is not sponsored. I wasn’t paid for this or sent any products for free. I been spending my own money on this for years and think you’ll love it like I do!

As seasons change splitting the work looks different than before, but it still needs to happen. I couldn’t imagine working all day and my partner not help me maintain the place we both call home or take care of the kids he helped me make.

Single ladies, have this conversation as early in the relationship as you can so you both have the right expectations going into marriage. Also take stock of his cleaning habits beforehand so you won’t be caught off guard later I’m fortunate because I didn’t marry a lazy man. He was on top of keeping his bachelor pad in order way before I came into the picture 🙌🏾

Now if you’re already in a relationship and struggling in this area, now would be a great time to lovingly but firmly set some boundaries, ask for some help, then get to delegating. God tells you to be your home’s manager, not a workhorse ♥️

P.S.
Now is a great time to remind you to grab the free prayer guide: “14 Days of Declaring Scriptures Over Your Husband”. It’s linked in my bio under “Free Guides”
